Keeley labored to open her heavy eyelids. Fog crowded her mind as she scrambled to determine where she was and what had happened. She moaned and licked her sandpaper-like lips.

“Keels, can you hear me?”

Someone rubbed her hand.

Her heart hammered in her heavy chest. Why did she feel like a bulldozer had taken her out?

“Keeley, it’s Brett. Can you open your eyes?” The voice grew louder.

She opened her eyes, but her cloudy vision blocked her view. She fluttered her eyelids until the room cleared.

The handsome man from her past hovered over her. “Keels. I’m here.”

“Brett?” Her voice squeaked out his name. She tried to clear her throat, but it felt like she’d swallowed slivers of glass. She pointed to her neck. “Dry.”

“Here, drink.” He held a bent straw to her lips.

She sipped and winced as the liquid slid down her parched throat. “What...happened?”

“We think you were poisoned. I got there just as you fainted.” Brett’s voice shook. “Do you remember anything?”

She drank more water, allowing it to cool the fire. “I remember talking to Mom, then falling. Where was the poison?”

“We believe in the coffee. Ginger is examining the mug and the pod. The hospital has taken lots of your blood.” He rubbed her arm.

“How long have I been out?”

“It’s now six in the evening, so almost seven hours.”

Keeley drank more water. “Where’s MJ?”

“Your mom took him to get a chocolate bar from the vending machine.” He chuckled. “Rather, it was MJ who took her.”

Keeley tried to smile, but her lips hurt too much. “He loves chocolate.”

“I gathered that.” Brett caressed her face. “How are you feeling?”

“Tired. Am I dying? Is that why I feel like an elephant is sitting on my chest?” She coughed.

Brett pushed the call button. “I’m going to get the doctor in here, but they believe we got to you in time.” He pointed to the IV drip. “They flushed your system and treated you.”

Seconds later, the door burst open, and the medical staff entered. A man approached her bed. “Dr. Ash, I’m Dr. Garrison. How are you feeling?” He placed his fingers on her wrist.

The nurse checked the machines.

“Chest is heavy. Tired. Am I dying?” She repeated her earlier question to Brett.

Dr. Garrison patted her arm. “All indications are showing improvement, so we believe you’re going to be fine. Someone was looking out for you, young lady.”

“Have they determined the poison used?”

Dr. Garrison turned toward Brett. “Wait. I remember now where I know you from. You’re the newer paramedic.”

“Brett Ryerson. Friend of Keeley’s.” He extended his hand.

The doctor returned the gesture. “Nice to meet you, but I still can’t discuss her condition.”

“Doc, it’s okay. Brett was the one who found me. If it wasn’t for him, I’d probably be dead.” She drank more water before continuing. “Please tell us.”

“Well, we won’t know exactly until our lab speaks with the police.” He chortled. “However, if your mother has anything to do with it, we should know soon. I’ve heard she’s putting on the pressure.”

“Yeah, she tends to do that.
